This Land Gives Me Rice, Rice Gives Life
Greenpeace Exhibition by Yunnan Rice Farmers
In celebration of May Asian
Heritage Month, the Chinese Cultural Centre Museum, in conjunction with
the Greenpeace
project and Co-op Radio will organize a photo exhibition, entitled
This Land Gives Me Rice, Rice Gives Life, by Chinese rice farmers
from Yunnan Province. The exhibition will open on April 28 and run to
May 27.
Rice is
one of the world’s staple diets. It is most popular in Asia,
particularly so in China. Yunnan being one of the luxuriant rice-growing
provinces is the homeland where thousands of varieties of rice have been
farmed, using age-old traditional methods. In recent years, the crops
are being threatened by recent growth of Chinese economy, urbanization
and industrialization, as well as use of genetically altered species
and pesticides.
To
promote sustainable agriculture and to celebrate the World Food Day and
its theme of biodiversity of food security, in 2004, Greenpeace China
organized an 8-day “The Road of Rice – The Ecological Agriculture Tour”
in Yunnan. Rice farmers, who had never used a camera, were given
Polaroids to document and reflect their lives
with photographs. The
result is the current environmentally educational exhibition.
Prior to
Vancouver, the exhibition has been previously shown in Beijing,
Guangzhou and Hong Kong.
